About: Mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the National Cathedral is the second largest church in the US and sixth largest in the world. It is located just north of the Naval Observatory and took 83 years to build, beginning in 1907. The Cathedral occupies the most prominent hill in the District and is visible from all over the central city. |

Notes: The most prominent religious building in Washington if not the country, the National Cathedral is also one of the most important pieces of Gothic architecture in America. Additionally, the observation deck, which affords sweeping views of Washington and the inner suburbs, is not to be missed. |
