Houses of God - Basilica and Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
About: The largest Roman Catholic church in America, the Basilica houses the largest collection of modern ecclesiastical art in the world. At 329 feet tall the tower, which sits on the grounds of Catholic University in Brookland, is the second tallest building in the District after only the Washington Monument. Though more prominent than Saint Matthew’s the 1920 Basilica is not a cathedral. Notes: Though the interior nave arrangement is in the typical Gothic layout, the Basilica is on the whole a fine example of Byzantine architecture. Its exotic stylings, coupled with its numerous domes and arches give the Basilica the most interesting exterior of Washington’s large churches.
