1: Corridor Cities Transitway
Light Rail / BRT 2010
Montgomery County, unwilling to wait for Metro to extend the Red Line past Shady Grove, is coordinating with MTA to build a light rail line serving the Gaithersburg and Germantown areas. From Shady Grove the transitway will connect to the King Farm neighborhood in Rockville, then move on to Gaithersburg where it will serve Washingtonian, Muddy Branch, Kentlands, Diamond Farms and Metropolitan Grove (where it will connect with MARC). After that it will turn north to Germantown Town Center before ending in Clarksburg.
The Corridor Cities Transitway is, along with the Metro Silver Line to Dulles, the closest to reality of all current proposals. The Draft EIS was completed in summer 2002, with a final decision expected to be made in the near future.
2: Red Line Extension past Shady Grove
Metro Speculated
Montgomery County and the City of Gaithersburg are anxious to extend service northwards, however Shady Grove is currently the furthest-out station in the Metro system. As such, a Red Line extension is low priority for WMATA and not expected to be seriously considered until a number of other additions are made. When the line is eventually extended it will follow the existing rail tracks to stations at Old Town Gaithersburg, Metropolitan Grove, and possibly Old Germantown.
3: Georgia Avenue past Glenmont Metro
BRT 2020
Montgomery County is considering BRT service along Georgia Avenue beginning at the Glenmont Metro station and extending north to Olney. The line is listed on the Go! Montgomery plan, but planning has yet to begin.
4: Techway Rail Component
Speculated
Though opposed by NIMBY neighborhood groups, support is building for a "second crossing" of the Potomac to connect the I-270 corridor in Gaithersburg with the Dulles corridor in Reston. Although the focus of the proposal is for a highway, many plans include a rail component.
Please note that while most of lines plotted on these maps are fairly accurate, the Techway right-of-way is almost totally guesswork on the part of BeyondDC.
5: Purple Line
Metro or Light Rail 2010 and 2020
MTA and Montgomery County are coordinating planning for the first part of a beltway loop transit line. The first phase begins in downtown Bethesda and follows the right-of-way of the old Georgetown Branch to Silver Spring before cutting southeast to College Park and New Carrollton. Once the first phase is complete Virginia plans on connecting to the loop via Tysons Corner.
6: Route 29
BRT 2020
Montgomery County is considering BRT service along Route 29 (Colesville Road) beginning at the Silver Spring Metro station and extending north to Burtonsville. The line is listed on the Go! Montgomery plan, but planning has yet to begin.
7: New Hampshire Avenue
Light Rail / BRT Speculated
Though not on any current plans, Maryland would like to see significant transit services extend from the Georgia Avenue Metro station in Washington up New Hampshire Avenue before connecting with a future line along Route 29 in Montgomery County.
