Chevy Chase sits on the border of Maryland and the District. The Maryland side is part of the Bethesda Planning Area and the DC side is part of Ward 3, which includes everything west of Rock Creek and north of Georgetown. Lastly, the Maryland side is divided among several different incorporated and unincorporated areas. Because of these factors it is impossible to generate statistics that are in any way representative of Chevy Chase as a "city".

The Beverly Hills of the mid-Atlantic. Split in half by the DC line, Chevy Chase is partly a Maryland suburb and partly a Washington neighborhood. Originally a streetcar suburb and sometimes known as Friendship Heights, it’s grown to rank among the region’s most affluent localities, and is the best high-end shopping spot in the area.

“Good evening. I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not”. No one knows if the actor of Saturday Night Live fame got his pseudonym from this Maryland city, but it’s a great running gag for locals. Try to pay with a Bank of Chevy Chase credit card in another state and you’re likely to induce questioning looks. The actual city sticks out as the Washington region’s best urban shopping experience. Though it can’t rival the super-malls of Tysons Corner in shear size, the urban and pedestrian friendly stores of Chevy Chase present Washingtonians with the kind of high-end retail district every large city should have, but very few actually do.
